Take time a few minutes and view the other tenants at the cemetery while visiting.
If you grew up in the '60s, you might remember a song by the New Christy Minstrels...If you are in the area, stop in and pay respects to the desert camel corps camel driver.
Beautiful cemetery well maintained
Interesting monument in an old cemetery surrounded by a trailer park. This monument is dedicated to Hadji Ali aka Hi Jolly it's interesting to learn about how qm immigrants became a local Legend 150 years later. This monument is worth a 10 minute stop.
Hi Jolly's monument is located in the Quartzsite Cemetery. Nothing fancy but a nice commemoration for a man who left his family and country to support the US Army Camel Corps in 1857.
It's great to go to a National historic site. Although not a large site it was good to visit and read of the contribution of this man. Camels were his link to a move to the USA, his commitment to the people of Quartzsite kept him in the area.
Very interesting. It's also the city cemetary.
Nice memorial. Historic marker. Fascinating history
Interesting piece of history. Very hot outside!! :)
I really enjoyed visiting this attraction. Definitely a must see, quick stop.
I love going there. So much interesting history explained on the large, easy to read plaque. It's obvious that the stone pyramid beside the plaque was built with Love. Well, please see photos (mine aren't very good). The Hi Jolly monument is not in a shaded area, so be careful of the sun. It is wheelchair accessible. I didn't see handicapped parking in the small parking lot, but the parking is within 15-20' from Hi Jolly, anyway. You'll find parking except during what we affectionately call 'The Season'. Then you just take a chance, I'm afraid. It's a wonderful tribute to the man and the camels. Signs on Main Street will point the way.Enjoy our little town of Quartzsite!
Neat stop for a bit of unknown history for many people. Quartzite is a great place to stop for a day or two from the road and regenerate, refuel and take in a few sites.
Interesting bit of history. Spent a few minutes here pondering camels in the desert.
Very well maintained. Nice plaque showing the history. Old tombstones
This is an awesome place to visit and tells the history.
Very interesting and educational. Worth the stop.
I was on a day-long Geocaching adventure in the desert when we stopped by this town for some food.We looked up caches in town while we were eating and ended up finding this awesome cemetery and monument. The scenary was serene, the graveyard was quiet and I learned a lot about the history of the area by visiting this monument.I have to hope that there still might be feral camels wandering the hills out here.Somewhere.
Really cool piece of Quartzsite and US Army history
Quartezite and Wisconsinite. Just go well together.
Fun atmosphere. Very comfortable place
Neat but hidden treasure to history. Go to cemetery and there it is.
The tomb of Hi Jolly The Camel Driver. Located inside the cemetary. Beautiful pyramid shaped tomb made from nice rocks.
Very interesting back story that i had never heard of. Quaint and peaceful.
Had a good time at the rock and mineral show
It's more than just a tomb. It's an active cemetery. You will recognize the names of many of the Quartzsite streets in the older part of the cemetery. A piece of local history and very worth the stop.
Very interesting to learn this about this.
Loved this place...learned about “Haj Ali” Hi Jolly, and was happy to make it to his tomb
Quartzite is a great little town. Lots of history there. The story of Hi Jolly is very interesting
Very interesting place to check out. Quite a bit of history here.
An interesting memorial to a man I had never heard of before. It is definitely worth a quick pitstop if you find yourself in Quartzsite.
The history is so supercool and it's upkeep is always beautiful. I've loved watching this place change and evolve over the 35 years that we've been stopping there to stretch and eat as our halfway point to California from Arizona.
Hot, dry, but very interesting. Summer is off season for Quartzite so very empty. Easy to park, not a lot of "stores" open but the ones that were have some great bargains. January and February are the crowded times with mineral shows, RV shows and so much more. Population grows to over by a million people, compared to the normal 10,000.
Really interesting and genuine glimpse of local history.
It was a cemetery of other people and unfortunately several small child. Sad but beautiful also
Interesting story that accompanies this unusual monument. Also is a cemetery. Worth a quick stop if near Quartzsite, AZ.
Interesting tidbit regarding the army's short lived experiment using camels.
Visited after seeing a Brown Sign on the Highway. The site was easy to find at The entrance to the cemetery. Didn't know what to expect but turned out to be a very interesting site. Reading about Hi Jolly after my visit was very interesting.
A brochure would provide added info. Interesting piece of history from 150 years ago.
A lot of these gravesites date far back as 1843. This site made me curious as to who they were, what they did,how they passed. RIP all
Pretty interesting place a lot of history around there probably go back
Hadji Ali (Hi Jolly per the Americans), a Syrian Camel Driver, came along with 70 camels to the US as an experiment to the US Army. Later on, Civil War interrupted the experiment, the Army did not adopt the project and the camels were sold at auction >.<Interesting piece of history driving through Quartzite, AZ.Fun place to visit with many gem/jewel shops 3 min walking distance away.
A piece of little known western history. Worth checking out if you are in this area.
Honestly I only stopped here because they have a Pokemon gym. But it's a nice little peaceful spot.
A very cool monument with a great insight to local history.
This is a well kept cemetery. The community love and respect are obvious. I came here to pay respect to a legendary desert character. I won't tell you the whole story, I'm leaving you something to discover. Happy trails!
A great place to learn a little about some American history
If you can stop by and don't mind walking around its great to look at. It's a cemetery some of the people here got baried a long time ago it's really interesting. Some of them are sad some children buried here :/ but that's life right.Honestly when I was here I couldn't help but wonder what this area would have been like during hi jollys time. Just wondering what life was like for people in the area, what kind of jobs they had, the houses they built, the small shops that would have been here ( it's a small area shop around if you can)
Great place to stop
Not too far off the main road. Can be visited in 5 minutes, then back to on the road.
Truly a beautiful place! :) must see in quartzsite
